Battle Of The Lip Glosses: Clarins vs. NYX

July 14, 2015

If I had to choose between a lip gloss and a lipstick, I'd choose the latter - no questions asked. For me, nothing beats a good lippy. I'm a low maintenance kind of girl (at least, I try to be) and lipsticks just seem to require less touching up - even if you're wearing a red. I suppose this is due to the array of finishes available in lipsticks: mattes, sheer tones, lustres, cream-sheens, frosts and pearls to name a few (yes M.A.C I'm looking at your purse-emptying lipstick stands that always manage to lure me in). So whether you want a lip colour that just won't budge or one that gives your lips a nice juicy *yes, I said juicy* high-shine finish whilst harnessing impressive colour payoff and staying power, lipsticks just seem to fit the bill. But, despite my undenying love for lipsticks, there are times when I want something less... well, 'done up'.

There is something so effortless about a glossy lip, especially when paired with a bright blush and a simple eye: a bit of mascara and liner sans eye shadow. It's fresh, youthful and fun. That being said, I do have my qualms with lip gloss. For one, most glosses I've tried (and believe me I've tried many) are sticky, so sticky that whenever I press my lips together, it would either cause strings of gloopy gloss to form or, the gloss would adhere to any minuscule dry patches I may have, making them all the more obvious.

So when I heard about the mother of all lip gloss - the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector (I have the shades 01, 02 and 03) - I was skeptical. I mean, how amazing could a lip gloss be? Turns out pretty damn amazing. Whilst the consistency was the best I had ever tried - even in application, no gooping (hurrah!), smoothing over any imperfections (finally a product that lives up to it's name - it is indeed a "lip perfector") - it lacked in pigmentation. Don't get me wrong, I knew it was sheer, but not that sheer. Although the Clarins ILNLP (let's just abbreviate the name shall we?) comes in an assortment of different shades, six to be exact, it is extremely difficult to differentiate between the colours upon application. If you have extremely pigmented lips like I do (thanks Mum) most of the colours will look pretty darn similar.

You might have to browse eBay for the next one because, unfortunately, the NYX Butter Glosses are always out of stock on the NYX Cosmetics UK website. The Butter Glosses do everything the Clarins ILNLPs do - heck they even smell the same - and even what they don't. Totally opaque in colour, line-filling and creamy at just a fraction of the price.

I know where my £££'s going.
